For centuries artists have been flocking to Cornwall for its light, beautiful landscapes and dramatic weather. Along with them has grown a creative hub including some of the best galleries in the UK. Perfect for rainy days this summer, let's get exploring Cornwall's art scene...

The Jackson Foundation, St Just

A unique, ambitious, multi-award winning, carbon-negative art-space celebrating the relationship between art and the natural world. Housed within a massive ex-industrial building in the centre of St Just-in-Penwith, the Foundation was set up by leading contemporary artist Kurt Jackson and hosts an annual programme of quality contemporary exhibitions working in partnership with a variety of environmental and non profit organisations. Free entry.

North Coast Asylum, Newquay

Born from an artist - photographer duo and a desire for an artistic sanctuary aimed at promoting contemporary artists and photographers, this gallery focuses on emerging talent from Cornwall and the UK.

The Poly, Falmouth

An arts and music venue in vibrant Falmouth that houses a gallery, cinema, pottery, studio, theatre and more. Exhibitions from local artists are regularly changing and the programme of workshops are a great way to get creative.

The Leach Pottery, St Ives

Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the Leach Pottery, St Ives, is among the most respected and influential potteries in the world. Explore the 100 year old pottery; the clay room, the throwing room with kick wheels and the Japanese climbing kiln. Learn about the history of the pottery and the many potters that have spent time training and working at the Leach Pottery before viewing the current exhibitions.

Falmouth Art Gallery

With one of the most significant art collections in the county, this is one place to add to your list. With over 2,700 artworks that range from Pre-Raphaelite and British Impressionist paintings to contemporary prints, photography and a children’s illustration archive. They also have three thematic exhibitions a year.

Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance

Tucked away in beautiful gardens in the centre of Penzance is this fantastic gallery. With regular exhibitions as well as permanent collections there is plenty to explore from the famous Newlyn School of artists to more modern works. There is also a great cafe and a regular programme of events to get involved with.

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Newlyn & Penzance

These two venues make a nice afternoon out as it is a 2km stroll along the Penzance seafront between them. The two spaces reflect the diversity of current artists from Cornwall, the UK and internationally as well as holding workshops and walking tours. Both sites have cafes.
